Featuring a remarkable collection from 1924 to 1981, this exhibition at the Museo Storico della Fanteria unveils Joan Miró’s journey of artistic freedom, experimentation, and rejection of conventional dogmas. With works from private Italian and French collections, many rarely seen by the public, visitors will be guided through 8 thematic areas: Lithographs, Posters, Poetry, Ceramics, Derrière le Miroir, Painting, Music, and ‘Miró and His Friends,’ each reflecting unique passions and intersections in Miró’s art.

Among the highlights are vibrant lithographs, crafted with perfection by master engraver Fernand Mourlot, who brought unparalleled depth to Miró’s color. The exhibition also showcases exquisite hand-painted ceramics and lithographic plates from Parler Seul, created for Dadaist poet Tristan Tzara’s verses (1950), as well as Miró’s detailed sketches for L’Uccello Luce by Silvano Bussotti (1981), produced for the Venice Biennale. In the Miró and His Friends section, a selection of works by Man Ray, Picasso, Dalí, and photographs by Cohen and Bertrand, along with documents from poets like Breton, Éluard, Chair, and Tzara, highlights Miró’s deep artistic connections.

Three key aspects of Miró’s genius, celebrated in this exhibition, offer insight into his creative revolution: the transformation of artistic language through a unique balance of abstract and figurative that transcends boundaries; the dreamlike, lyrical dimension of his work, brimming with freedom and color even in politically challenging times; and finally, his resilient joie de vivre, expressed in an original language that taps into the raw, primal depths of self-expression.
